This morning I walked to Witham Park to experiment with a new camera. I photographed this lichen hoping to identify it, but my book isn't very clear. Does anyone recognise it?
Update: thanks to everyone who helped identify the lichen. It's Common Orange Lichen (
Xanthoria parietina).
I don't think I could identify it, but it is very pretty to look at. Something I never thought I would say about lichen. ;)
ReplyDeleteThere's a good site, britishlichens.co.uk, if you'd like a browse. Could it be two different species? I know nothing about lichens, as you can tell. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen anything like this before or maybe I have, but did not pay much attention to it.

nice capture
ReplyDeleteThese are fascinating fungi. They usually grow in very extreme climates.
ReplyDeleteI would never attempt to identify it because I'm notorious for getting this kind of thing wrong. It's a very interesting shot. This is the kind of thing I wish I could get.
ReplyDeleteI cannot identify it but it's a great shot.
ReplyDeleteIt looks more like a liverwort to me.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful. I've never seen it up close like this.
ReplyDeleteThis is Xanthoria parietina, a common lichen that loves nitrogen, it is thought to be among the most resistant organisms to high ammonia levels in the environment. Common in cities and near cow and chicken sheds and any where man is messing up a bit. Occurs naturally on bird perches and seaside rocks. Also very pretty!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the identification Neil. No wonder I was struggling, the picture in "Complete British Wildlife" was taken from a distance!
ReplyDeleteSo icky and beautiful all at once. What a gorgeous color!
ReplyDeleteIt's an extremely interesting shot. I would guess that you took a trip to an alien planet and shot some of the local flora! I love the foreign look of it.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing this in Scotland I think, but never knew what is was. A tough species by all accounts, it must have been Scotland then!
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate your visits. Even when I didn't visit yours. Wow!!! You are an amazing person. Thank you so much
