I've been hoping to capture a few pictures of damselflies but haven't had much success. They're just too fast! Jordan at IrishViews has kindly allowed me to use his photo to show what I've been chasing all summer. Thanks Jordan. :-)
The damselfly pictured is male. Females are green and black. Common Blue Damselflies are almost identical to Common Coenagrions. The main difference is the pattern on the abdomen.
I agree, John. I, too, have been trying to capture one on camera and cannot. This one is really gorgeous. I don't know if you've ever visited Bird over at thebirdsinthemeadow, but she has captured some excellent photos of them, too. Ah, maybe next summer...
I managed to capture a few (photographically :) )earlier this summer. If I'm perfectly honest it was by accident. I was trying for the flowering river weed and found the damselflies when I looked at the pictures later.
Thanks for the plug John! I took that one years ago with a Fuji S9600 camera - which is actually better than the Sony A350 DSLR that I have at present for thsoe type of shots (unless I ever get round to buying a proper macro lens....)

I wonder why it's called damselfly...
