Silk button spangle galls are caused by the larvae of the gall wasp Neuroterus numismalis. It's strange how different species of wasp cause the oak tree to build completely different structures.
John, I have not seen this before or if I did, did not know what it was so found the picture very interesting. Thanks for sharing it and now you can be sure I will be looking for silk button spangle galls.

I think I've seen similar ones to these. It's been a long time though. I would never know it was wasp larvae.
