Dog Whelk, Newquay

dog whelk, mollusc, nucella lapillus

I spotted this dog whelk on the beach at Newquay. The rock pools there are home to numerous molluscs and invertebrates, including anemones, mussels and limpets.

This looks much better than I imagined any shells to look. I don't swim well so I don't have much of a chance to see any, so I didn't know any might have such broad stripes.

I recently added you to my Entrecard Drop List because you keep your widget nice and high on the page, makes it easy to find. But as I go dropping each morning, I find myself stopped dead in my tracks by these lovely images. This shell for example, I know it's hard but it looks so soft and touchable. An illusion, I know, caused by the moisture clinging to it. Absolutely beautiful, thank you for sharing these images.

Cool! I've never seen one in the wild... just at museums and in pix. It's really pretty!
