Thistledown is the soft silky material attached to thistle seeds to enable them to float on the breeze. We used to call them thistle fairies and try to catch one to make a wish :-)
Those are some BIG thistle heads! We have a lot of thistles too, but most are alien. The nodding thistle is pretty in all its stages, but it too doesn't belong.
Nice photo, never knew they were called that. When we've been out west camping years ago used to see lots of these and the big purple flowers are quite pretty. Though I wouldn't want them in my yard, as I consider them a weed and they make me sneeze. lol
How interesting! I am not very fond of thistle in my garden...one seed will create a whole field it seems like. Great photo. Funny how something so pesty can be so pretty!

We see many out here though not that large and we used to do the same, make wishes. For me these are unnoticed little beauties :)
I've been visiting your wonderful photo blog. As a lover of photography, I'd definitely say your works are utterly amazing! :D
What a beautiful photo! It makes me want to reach out and touch it. I think I might like a thistle down duvet though - imagine how soft it would be!
weird but lovely plants. i think we have it in the philippines growing in the grassland but not with that kind of variety.
Looking at the Thistledown gave me a ticklish feeling. :)
